The real Hustle – The mustard dip scam

The mustard dip scam

Definition: the mustard-dip scam is essentially one more variation of the common methods that ordinary thieves use to pickpocket you.

It is a known fact that cut-pursers prefer it when your purse is inside the ‘default’ position, the back pocket of your jeans (especially true for men). Now, imagine yourself walking down a busy, crowded street; your purse is full of money but as long as it’s inside your coat’s pocket you feel very calm and secure, right? Well, as it turns out hustlers have found new methods of physically separating you from your money, even when your purse is not in your back pocket! The scam requires at least two persons, ideally three or more. The scenario is described below:

While you are walking, one of the gang members throws mustard (that’s where the name of the scam comes from, but it could be anything that serves the same purpose, mustard just happens to work great) at the back of your coat. Chances that you might see him doing it are very slim; this becomes a benefit for the gang when the next hustler kicks in. After just a few seconds, the second gang member plays the role of the Good Samaritan and notifies you about the back of your coat being full of mustard! You stop to see what’s wrong but before you can take off your coat by yourself, the “Good Samaritan” approaches to help you. At this point, one more “Good Samaritan” might approach you from the opposite direction and offer you a hand chief to clean the mustard. Of course, the only reason he comes to offer the hand chief is to distract your attention and let the other hustler do his job while he is already ‘entitled’ to help you take off your coat. Finally, while all this is happening, a third hustler passes by and picks up your purse. This is to ensure that if –just before you thank the ‘Good Samaritans’ and part ways- you understand that your purse is missing, the 2 hustlers that helped you are ‘clean’ because even if they are searched, the purse won’t be on them!

Final words: Having your purse stolen is a very nasty thing to happen to you. Along with your money, you might also loose important documents such as your driver’s license or your personal id card! If you encounter a similar situation to the one described above, the first thing that you should do would be to put your hand in the pocket where your purse is. After that, you can calm down and see what’s going on. Since you are still alive and no part of your body is hurting you, nothing could be worse than loosing your purse.
